St Catherine’s Monastery on the Sinai Peninsula, one of the oldest Orthodox monastic settlements in the world, is presented in the context of its biblical history, the role of Empress Helena and Emperor Justinian in its foundation, as well as its links with Romanian rulers such as Constantin Brâncoveanu and Metropolitan Antim Ivireanul, who was exiled to Sinai.

Bishop Chesarie of Râmnic (ordained in 1774, died in 1780) is regarded as one of the most important cultural figures of 18th-century Romania, through his printing work in Râmnic, where he oversaw the printing of the Minei and other religious texts exclusively in Romanian, thereby making a decisive contribution to the replacement of Church Slavonic in the Orthodox Church of Wallachia.

Bishop Vartolomeu Stănescu of Râmnic (1921–1950) was one of the most active hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the first half of the 20th century, distinguishing himself through the founding of the ‘Renașterea’ Society, the organisation of parish centres, libraries and priests’ residences, the establishment of clergy credit unions, and the revitalisation of monastic life in Oltenia. His pastoral, missionary and cultural work profoundly transformed the Diocese of Râmnic, providing the clergy and faithful of Oltenia with solid frameworks for religious, social and economic development.

The reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu (1688–1714) is analysed as an era of cultural synthesis in Wallachia, during which artistic patronage, residential and religious architecture, printed works and mural painting shaped an original pan-Romanian style. By relating the prince’s actions to the principles of Medicean culture and the European Baroque context, the article demonstrates that Brâncoveanu represented a watershed in the Romanians’ transition from the Middle Ages to modernity.

The article reconstructs the circumstances surrounding the arrival of the hieromonk Antim Ivireanul in Bucharest, based on key documents: Hrisant Notara’s letter to Ianache Văcărescu (1709), Metropolitan Antim’s first letter of defence to Constantin Brâncoveanu (1712) and the preface to the 1706 Evhologhion written by Mihail Iștvanovici. It is argued that Antim was brought from Iași to Bucharest in 1689 by Hrisant Notara, at the behest of Patriarch Dosithei, to learn the art of printing under Bishop Mitrofan, and that he also served as abbot of the Monastery of Saint Sava.

The coat of arms of Saint Antim Ivireanul, a silver snail in a vertical position (in pale) bearing a six-pointed star between its horns, is analysed from a heraldic and symbolic perspective in the context of the Foundation Charter of the Monastery of All Saints (1713) and the Archiepiscopal Charter of 1715, revealing that the choice of the snail expresses detachment from earthly things and the ascent towards heavenly things.

This article traces the development of research into and the veneration of Saint Antim Ivireanul following his canonisation in 1992, with a focus on contributions from the last two decades: new editions of Antim’s works, Romanian-Georgian collaboration, the events marking the commemorative year of 2016, and the work of the Antim Ivireanul Centre for Medieval and Pre-modern Studies in Râmnicu-Vâlcea, including the journal Lumina lumii and the Antimiana anthologies.

Saint Antim Ivireanul, Hierarch and Martyr, Bishop of Râmnic from 1705 to 1708 and subsequently Metropolitan of Wallachia, is regarded as a founding figure of Romanian culture and spirituality, owing to his work as a printer — including The Book of Joy and nine other books published in Râmnic —, as a preacher, icon painter and spiritual guide, whose martyr’s death crowned a lifetime devoted to the service of the Church and the Romanian people.

The five homilies of Saint Antim of Ivire, delivered on Palm Sunday, constitute the most substantial homiletic collection in his Didachies, offering a vivid picture of sacramental practice in Wallachia at the beginning of the 18th century. Analysed in turn, these sermons reveal the theology of repentance, Baptism and frequent communion, a scathing critique of the boyars’ hypocritical penance, and an urgent call to confession during the three days of Holy Week.

The study analyses The Book, or Light, with Clear Proofs from the Dogmas of the Eastern Church Concerning the Schism of the Papists, printed by Saint Antim of Ivirean at Snagov Monastery in 1699, a translation of the work by the hieromonk Maxim of the Peloponnese, produced against the backdrop of the spread of Catholic propaganda in Transylvania. The anti-Roman arguments concerning papal primacy, the procession of the Holy Spirit, unleavened bread and purgatory are presented, emphasising the polemical and catechetical value of the printed work, which remains, to this day, untransliterated into modern Romanian.
