Critical pedagogy and religious education
Professor, PhD Evanghel Pepés This article analyses the relationship between critical pedagogy — based on Habermas’s theory and developed by Mezirow, Giroux and McLaren — and Orthodox Christian religious education, examining whether the principles of critical thinking are compatible with the teaching of Orthodox truth. The conclusion is that Orthodox epistemology, which defines the knowledge of God as an existential and personal encounter, does not contradict freedom and critical reflection, but rather presupposes them.
