Studia Humanitatis No. II (XX) / 2025 From the former library of Ghenadie Enăceanu, Bishop of Râmnic: Charters issued by the rulers of Wallachia in the 17th century and decorated with miniatures Dr. Oana-Mădălina Popescu

The study presents historical documents from the collection of the scholar-bishop Ghenadie Enăceanu, held at the Library of the Romanian Academy, with a focus on charters adorned with miniatures issued by Matei Basarab, Grigorie I Ghica, Radu Leon, Gheorghe Duca and Constantin Brâncoveanu in the 17th century. The analysis combines the legal and socio-economic content of the documents with an examination of their miniature decoration — plant, zoomorphic and iconographic motifs, as well as votive portraits — highlighting the links between chancery art and the miniatures found in religious manuscripts from Wallachia.

This article presents the prefaces by the Greek editors Polyzóis Labanițiótis and Gheorghe Vendótis to Meletius of Athens’ Ecclesiastical History, preserved in the unpublished Romanian manuscript by Naum Râmniceanu held at the Library of the Romanian Academy, alongside the foreword by Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi from the Iași edition (1841–1842), highlighting the editorial efforts and the context of the Viennese printing (1783–1795).

The Romanian manuscripts from the former library of Cernica Monastery, now held at the Library of the Romanian Academy, contain two parallel translations of the Ecclesiastical History by Metropolitan Meletius of Athens: one produced by Naum Râmniceanu at Cernica, with the blessing of Saint Calinic, and another by Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi, copied at Neamț. These manuscripts illustrate the links between the Romanian-speaking world and Greek-speaking Orthodoxy, as well as the connections between the monastic communities of Wallachia and Moldavia in the first half of the nineteenth century.

The study presents previously unpublished documents from the Library of the Romanian Academy relating to Saint Calinic, covering the period of his abbotship at Cernica Monastery and his episcopate in Râmnic, including deeds, letters to the abbots Nicandru and Diomid, documents concerning the Pupăza estate and the baptism of the Jew Moise, as well as an analysis of the two types of seals of Cernica, dating from 1819 and 1842.
